Analysing Domestic Violence through Integrated System Evaluation.
Domestic violence often hides within broader crime categories, hindering effective intervention. The ADVISE project aims to uncover these hidden patterns by analysing integrated data from justice, health, and administrative sources.
Many domestic violence cases are often recorded as assault, GBH, or stalking, hiding the true extent of the issue. The aim of the project is to identify domestic violence within the criminal justice system by analysing court, prison, probation, and health records, focusing on assaults within households.
By examining data from court cases, prison records, probation reports, and healthcare services, researchers aim to:
- Identify trends in domestic violence cases that may otherwise go unnoticed.
- Understand perpetrator behaviour through court history, imprisonment records, and links to substance abuse.
- Recognise victim indicators in healthcare records, police protection notices, and emergency service reports.
- Develop predictive models to help prevent future cases and inform policy changes.
ADVISE integrates multiple sources of information, including data from the Ministry of Justice (MOJ) and the Office for National Statistics (ONS), alongside court, prison, health, substance abuse, and census records. This approach allows for a detailed, data-driven analysis of domestic violence patterns.
Key Areas of Investigation
- Mapping Domestic Violence Trends – Identifying clusters of domestic abuse incidents through linked data.
- Understanding Perpetrator Behaviour – Analysing reoffending patterns and risk factors.
- Enhancing Prevention Efforts – Using predictive analysis to inform proactive interventions.
Research Methods will include literature review of existing domestic violence research, linking justice system data with enhanced Welsh datasets, and predictive analysis using ONS and Welsh data sources.
The findings will support the development of stronger, evidence-based policies, ultimately enhancing community safety and improving support for victims. Additionally, the research will provide a deeper understanding of how community demographics influence domestic abuse and evaluate the effectiveness of current preventative measures. Through this work, ADVISE will contribute to long-term strategies that reduce domestic violence and support those at risk.
Collaboration & Impact
ADVISE is working closely with academic institutions, government agencies, police forces, healthcare providers, and charities to ensure a well-rounded and impactful approach. Findings will be shared through academic publications, policy reports, and public outreach efforts to drive meaningful change.
This project aims to transform how domestic violence is identified and prevented, ensuring that at-risk individuals receive the support they need, and interventions are more effective.
