Free School Meals Evaluation: Wales
Access to free school meals is key to tackling childhood poverty and improving health. In Wales, Universal Free School Meals (UFSM) has been rolling out since 2022, gradually expanding to ensure all primary school children have access to a nutritious meal.
Research on School Meals in Wales
The World Food Programme UK and Research Consortium for School Health and Nutrition invited our researchers to lead a case study on school meals in Wales. Part of a UK-wide study, it also contributes to the global School Meals Coalition case study library.
The findings were presented in November 2022, and our researchers continues to work with UK and global partners to evaluate the impact of school meal programmes.
Ongoing Research on UFSM
Amy Locke, PhD student at the Centre for Population Health, is studying the impact of UFSM on children’s health and well-being. Her research explores:
- How UFSM is being implemented and used in schools.
- Effects on children’s health, well-being, and social experiences.
- Views of children, parents, and school staff, gathered through focus groups, interviews, and surveys.
- Long-term health trends tracked using self-reported data.
Building Evidence for Policy
The Centre collaborates with schools and research networks, including HAPPEN and GENIUS, to gather insights.
This research will provide vital evidence to guide policy, improve school meals, and support children’s health in Wales.
